Why Does Zappos Have a 'Coupon Code' Box When They Don't Have Coupons?

You've probably heard of Zappos, or seen them prominently featured on TLCs "What Not to Wear" with Stacy London and Clinton Kelly.

One question we hear a lot is, "Why Does Zappos Have a Coupon Code Box When They Don't Have Coupons?" When shopping on the Zappos.com web site, there is a box in the shopping cart labeled, "Gift Certificate or Coupon Code:" but we've never seen an actual coupon code!

This is so confusing for shoppers. Who doesn't see that box, wonder what kind of discount they might be missing out on, go searching for a code and come up empty-handed? Maybe Zappos has some secret, one-time use only codes, and that's why the box is there - who knows!

The bottom line is that right now, you get free shipping and free return shipping at Zappos.com, and any sale discounts they have available. No extra discounts (we're sorry to say!).

While Zappos does have a great selection, we like Shoebuy.com better because they do offer coupons (along with free shipping and free return shipping). If Shoebuy has the item, chances are you will get a better price with a coupon than you will at Zappos.

Happy Shopping!

  1. The code box is for employee code discounts

  2. Not sure what that means, but it's still confusing for the average shopper to see a box labeled, "Have a Gift Card, Gift Certificate or Coupon Code? Add it here" and then not be able to find any discount that is valid for them. Perhaps it would be better to label the box differently, and mention "employee code" instead of "coupon code."

  3. I used this one once, when I called and I told them that they have an error in their page. Price was shown at 62.00 and when I tried to add it to the cart it was 95.00. They gave me a coupon code for the 33.00 difference.

  5. It's great that they send coupon codes to select customers, but some shoppers might still be wondering what they are missing out on when they see a box during checkout that reads, "Redeem Gift Cards and Coupons." Maybe it would be helpful to give certain customers a click-through discount so that there is no reference to a "coupon" at all on their site.
